Leaving Room for Imagination

About the Creative power of ‘White Spaces’ in Art, Work and Life

After an hour of experimenting with broad strokes and big pots of color, our painting teacher challenged us.

“Fill only 40% of the canvas. Leave areas untouched. Play with the white.”

This sounded simple.
Yet, as someone used to covering the entire canvas with color, this felt unusual.

After a few strokes, I stepped back from an almost empty painting. I must admit that the emptiness gave the composition space, created tension, and invited imagination. Leaving spaces white opens up new options. Not painting is painting too.

“Whitespace is like air: it is necessary for design to breathe.”

Wojciech Zieliński

More white space

The ‚act‘ of not painting proved to be a profound lesson and prompted further reflection.

  • What would be if I would leave more ‘white space’ in what I do, think and say?
  • What would be possible if I ‘fill’ only 40% of the meeting time with content and structures?
  • What creative power could develop if daily calendars were 60% thinner?

I pause here, providing you with the space to imagine.

How are you playing with ‘not painting or saying or writing’ everything? Share your thoughts in the comments below. I’m curious to hear your perspective!

Enjoy your empty moment,

Yours gratefully,
Nadia
