Seeing the Bigger Picture

A Lesson in Perspective from a Feline Acrobat

Sometimes we need to elevate ourselves (literally or figuratively) to gain a better understanding of our situation.

It’s Monday morning, the sun is barely up. I’m on my bike, cycling through the polder, skimming the horizon with my eyes. As a Swiss living for eight years in the Netherlands, I still find the horizon amazingly vast and endless, sometimes breathtakingly big.

Suddenly, my eyes spot something odd. I stop and watch. In the distance, a cat balances on a fence post. Her eyes must have detected some movement in the grass. It looks acrobatic. She manages to keep her balance on the tiny surface.

I take a photo. With a smile on my face, I continue my little morning bike tour.

Back at my desk. I struggle to find my rhythm. It’s the first day after my holidays. I brew myself some coffee.

Then it hits me.

I need to be the cat. Not literally. (Though that would be something.) I mean, I need that perspective. That vantage point. That ability to see what’s hidden.

So I step away. I find a quiet spot in the garden to sip my coffee and think. Not about tasks. Not about emails. But about my “landscape”, the bigger picture of what I want to create and what I need to do to achieve this.

  • What do I want to focus on the coming month?
  • What opportunities might I be overlooking to advance my goals?
  • How can I create more space for creativity and innovation amidst my routine tasks?

This small act of ‘climbing up to my own fence post’ helped me gain clarity and set a more strategic course for the month ahead.

Here’s the thing: We all need a fence post.

In our work. In our lives. We need that place and “climb” it regularly, where we can step back, pause, look around, and really see.

Because the view from up there might just change everything.

So, what’s yours? Where do you go to gain perspective? How do you elevate yourself above the day-to-day? Share in the comments.
