Discovering gentle ways to renew our passions without starting over.
Renewal sometimes requires radical steps, like stopping and starting afresh. Other times, it’s gentler—mending what’s broken, breathing new life into the old.
Our old garden fence was falling apart. It was still from the previous owners, and it was time for a new one.
While the gardeners tore down the old timber fence, I biked to town to have coffee with my friend Julie. As I pedaled through the polder, I thought about my neglected blog. I considered “destroying” it and starting a newsletter instead. It felt like the fence – sometimes you’ve got to tear down before you can build up.
Julie, a smart marketer, inspired me. “Keep the blog,” she said. “Use the newsletter to amplify, to recap.”
Home again, the new fence was up. The gate was still leaning against the wall, waiting to be installed.
It dawned on me.
The blog didn’t need demolition.
It needed a new gate to infuse my writing with fresh energy and wonder. The newsletter could serve a different role. The blog could remain the heart of my content, while the newsletter could highlight key points, share updates, and bring new readers to my blog.
Here’s the thing about renewal.
It’s not always about starting from zero. Sometimes, it’s about finding a new angle, a different approach to the same old problem.
- What feels stale?
- What small, meaningful change could you take to renew your passion?
- What new perspective is possible to breathe life into old routines?
What about you? What tasks, habits, or practices could use a refresh? You might need to start from scratch or just find a new approach. Whatever it is, let me know. Share in the comments.
Exciting events on the horizon to support your exploration:

- Ecocycle Café: A series of insightful conversations to help you reflect, rethink, and renew.
- Liberating Journey: Find inspiration and support for transforming your collaboration. The 2nd cohort starts this October.
