Tune-up. Unhurry: Finding Beauty in Everyday.

Three Exercises to Help You Slow Down and Be Present

Unhurried = moving, acting, or taking place without haste or urgency.

Recently, while wandering through Amsterdam, I found myself caught up in thought, wondering if this was the right place for a Street Wisdom Walk. At first, I saw “only” a path, houses, tarmac, and weeds. It felt ordinary. I didn’t see the hidden oasis—the wild urban garden just a ferry ride from Amsterdam’s busy Central Station. I struggled to see the subtle beauty around me.

Then, something shifted. I began to slow down and settle in.

My steps grew lighter, and my eyes began to catch details I’d missed before. The weeds transformed into vibrant wildflowers, secret riverside paths appeared, and birds on balconies watched us—were they following us, or we them? A courtyard door even opened, inviting me and my fellow explorers to pass through. I became more and more enthusiastic; the mundane became vivid and joyful. I discovered a fabulous wild garden in the heart of Amsterdam.

When things are unhurried, we don’t necessarily go slow, but we create enough space for connection to happen.

By giving myself permission to pause and truly see, I discovered the magic in the small details. Remembering the wisdom of The Little Prince, I realized that “what is essential is invisible to the eye.” Unhurrying allowed me to make space for the wonders of the street.

Tune-up.

Here are three simple exercises that helped me—and can help you—embrace a slower pace and find wonder in everyday moments:

  • Be Drawn to What Attracts You: Follow your curiosity and let yourself be naturally drawn to what catches your eye. What stands out to you?
  • Slow. Right. Down: Move at a slower pace—really slow down. How does it feel to take things more slowly?
  • Sense the Beauty in Everything: Engage all your senses to fully experience the beauty around you. What subtle details do you notice?
