The Power of the Wiggle

How Little Moves Make a Big Difference

The dandelions are back.

While cleaning the terrace the other day, I noticed them — fragile green shoots pushing up through the cracks between the garden tiles. It made me smile. Life finds a way to grow in the smallest, most unlikely places.

I’ve always loved cracks. On walks, I often pause to marvel at what blooms in those in-between spaces — in pavement, on walls, between bricks. Tiny signs of resilience and creativity.

I see cracks also in work and life. A crack creates an opening, an opportunity, a subtle moment. A space to take initiative and do something slightly differently than the established way.

There’s a beautiful word in the German language: Spielraum. It describes a kind of wiggle room — space to move, explore, play, and try. When we recognise that we have Spielraum in our work environments, it’s up to us to use it and do what is needed.

Initiative is doing the right thing without being told.
Victor Hugo

In a recent collaboration with a team exploring inclusive leadership, we kept returning to the metaphor of soil. Organisational culture, we said, is like soil — it can be rich, nourishing, and full of fertile cracks where small actions can take root.

But even the most fertile ground won’t grow anything unless something is planted. Unless someone acts.

So the team identified what could help improve their collaboration — things like using communication platforms (WhatsApp, Slack) to reach out, share, and connect. They proposed cross-team buddy pairs and mentorship programs to break down silos. They wanted to share productivity hacks, run sessions on communication tools, and make sure younger scientists had priority to participate during Science Week.

Sure, someone might officially lead these initiatives. But beyond that, there’s room to move, experiment, and create. Ideas don’t have to wait — every team member can step in, take initiative, and make a difference.

What about you?
Where’s your wiggle room to make things happen?

And by the way, my terrace is blooming now with those determined dandelions. It’s a little wild, and it wasn’t part of the plan. But that’s exactly where the magic happens. 🌱
