After a conversation with someone who was joining one of my facilitation trainings, I realized that I was too radical in my approach to invite people to do some groundwork before playing with tools. I understood that this person felt naked without a toolbox and that what comes first – groundwork or toolbox – actually seems a ‘chicken and egg’ discussion. Stepping into the role of the facilitator and BEING the facilitator needs courage. Having a toolbox at hand might indeed help build the confidence.

Facilitation is a practice. It needs process literacy and knowledge about how groups nowadays work and learn together. This will help in making smart choices in navigating the design and facilitation process (see my earlier blog post Facilitation – it is all about tools, isn’t it?).
